About Us

Mission Statement

Literacy Council of Kitsap shall promote literacy efforts in our community so that those who are not yet literate can acquire the ability and confidence to increase and use English language skills. The Council shall provide free tutoring to adults to enable them to:

  • More fully participate in their community;
  • Get and keep a job;
  • Think independently and increase their capacity to be self-sufficient;
  • Break the cycle of illiteracy in their family;
  • Meet their educational goals; and/or continue to learn throughout life.

Our Philosophy

We believe...
  • Strong basic skills are critical to the effective functioning of our society and we provide instruction which will ultimately benefit learners.
  • A variety of strategies should be used to teach adult new readers, including written, oral, and kinesthetic demonstrations, small group learning, and individualized instruction.
  • Self-esteem is a critical component of learning.
  • Effective instruction recognizes the whole person.
  • Well-trained tutors/instructors provide the basis for student learning and success.
  • Collaboration with other social service agencies enhances the development and delivery of literacy services and increases the chance for student success.
