English Language Civics Class

Programs Offered

One-on-One Tutoring

The Literacy Council matches adults who wish to improve their skills
with trained volunteer tutors. They work together to help the adult learner:

    • Improve reading and writing skills
    • Learn to read to a child
    • Improve math skills
    • Improve their English as a second language
    • Pass the written driver's license test
    • Get their General Education Diploma (GED)

General Education Diploma (GED) Preparation

Students work at their own pace, assisted one-on-one by trained tutors. They learn math, reading, writing, and other skills covered by the five-part GED test. Students should be 18 or older to enter the program. A student under 18 requires special permission from the Council as well as a release from his/her school district.

English as a Second Language (ESL)

Volunteer tutors work one-on-one with foreign-born adults to help them become more comfortable speaking, understanding, reading, and writing English. The programs that we have
to offer to our ESL students are:

Talk Time
Adults from all over the world meet in a fun and informal setting to practice speaking English using real-life situations and games.

Citizenship
Students work one-on-one or in small classes to prepare to pass the citizenship test.

Computers
In the computer lab, ESL students learn to pronounce words using self-guided talking programs.

Workplace Literacy

Designed to take place in the workplace, this program helps students to achieve the tools and skills necessary to adequately function on the job. We work with employers to determine which specific skills are necessary for each employee, whether it is improving English skills to speak with customers or working on math skills. If you are an employer and are interested in this program, please call our office.

Family Literacy

A mother's education level is the greatest single factor that determines her children's chances for success in school. The Council offers an award-winning program, Motherhead/Fatherhead, to help parents learn to read to their children. Each participant receives free books to take home.

Drivers License Preparation

Students study in small classes to prepare for the written portion of the Washington State driver's license exam.
