    Basic Literacy

Basic Literacy students work one-on-one or in small group classes with trained volunteers. Students work on fundamental reading, writing and math skills. Also, basic tutors might help with anything from computer, to health, to financial literacy. They can serve as liaisons between parents and schools, helping them to understand schoolwork and correspondence from teachers.

    General Education Diploma (GED) Preparation
The Literacy Council provides individualized group instruction to prepare students to take the GED (General Education Development). Students work with an instructor, aide and trained volunteers to study for the five GED tests: reading, writing, math, science and social studies. LCK offers GED online and GED in Spanish as well.

Note: Students must register for and take the GED Test at Olympic College.

English as a Second Language (ESL)
English as a Second Language students work one-on-one and in small and large group classes with trained volunteers and instructors. These students are foreign-born adults who need help with English reading, writing, listening and speaking skills, as well as how become a functional member of our community. Citizenship and English Language Civics classes are also available.

    Family Literacy
In order to ensure that both adults and children are functional in today's society, LCK is developing a program to focus on the family. Education must be emphasized as playing an important role in their lives. Parents who are non-literate or have limited English communication skills are less likely to be involved in their children's academic progress, which is crucial to their child's success. Statistics show that literate parents raise healthier and more successful children than those with limited literacy skills.

    Workplace Literacy
Students who require help with skills specific to their jobs work with volunteers to strengthen their workplace literacy. Employee basic skills are key factors in keeping workplaces productive, safe and competitive. These skills also play a role in a worker’s personal and professional development. Curriculum is based on and developed for a student’s individual workplace needs.
