The Field Museum in Chicago offers up Sue, the world’s most complete skeleton of a tyrannosaurus rex for visitors to gawk at. While the Adler Planetarium (United States First Planetarium) offers two full sized theaters for visitors to enjoy a planetarium show in and the Shedd Aquarium is the world’s largest indoors and has over 20,000 different animals to observe.
If you are hankering for a bite to eat head no further than the nearest Chicago style pizza place to get your fill of the cheesy, tomato and pepperoni topped delight. That’s one memory you’ve got to take with you when you leave Chicago. Or if you like you can check out a fine dining experience in the form of a really good steakhouse, such as Morton’s of Chicago. At Morton’s you can get a properly cooked and seasoned steak with such fine food sides as al dente asparagus or just plain good potato hash browns. Pike’s Place Market
If you’re planning a trip to Seattle, you have to check out Pike’s Place Market! The locals call it “Pike’s Place” or often just “The Market”. What sets Pike’s Place aside from other tourist markets, such as San Francisco’s notorious Fisherman’s Wharf is that local Seattleites actually go to Pike’s Place for their own shopping. The Market offers a lot of authentic cuisine from the Northwest and is a great destination for any food lover planning a trip to Seattle.
Or, if you’re one of the more daring types, you can check out the Ghost Tour. Also, if you’re planning a trip there, don’t forget to pick up a dozen donuts from the famous Daily Dozen.
And don’t forget, the original Starbucks is there as well! It’s nothing too special, so don’t get too excited, but it’s a good place to say you’ve visited if you were in the area.
Kerry Park
If you’ve ever seen a picture of the Seattle skyline, chances are, you’ve it was a photo taken from Kerry Park. It can get pretty crowded with tourists in the summer, and particularly on spring nights as this is a go to place for high school kids to take prom photos.
Seattle is blessed with only 58 days of sun per year, so the only days you might get lucky with a good view is in the summer or spring time, all of which are very crowded. Yikes! However, if you were planning a trip to Seattle during these times, it’d be a great place to take in a view nonetheless! Just be careful of your belongings.
Valve (Software Company)
Did you know that Valve corporation is actually headquartered in Bellevue, Washington? (That’s about 10 miles east of Seattle, on the other side of the bridge). San Francisco is one of the most expensive cities to live in the United States. It’s also one of the most expensive tourist spots in the United States, if not the world. Don’t worry though, armed with the right knowledge, you’ll be able to navigate your way through the streets on a shoestring budget. There are plenty of free and cheap options to select from. The city also has decent public transportation, so you can avoid the rental car fee.
Amazing things things to do
Perhaps the best place to go to is Twin Peaks. It’s two peaks standing 922 feet tall into the sky with fantastic views of the entire city. It was originally called “Los Pechos de la Choca” or the Breasts of the Maiden. The best part about Twin Peaks? It’s completely free! Just remember to bring a coat because it can get pretty chilly.
One of the hidden free gems of the Bay Area is Randall Museum. It’s an arts and science museum for children. Exhibits include a simulated habitat for live animals, wild urban animals section, model trains, natural disasters, and other various workshops. This museum is ideal for families with children since many of the exhibits include hands-on activities.
Many attractions have one free entrance day per month including San Francisco Zoo, Exploratorium, and California Academy of Science. The San Francisco Zoo is free on the first Wednesday of each month. It’s a small zoo encompassing 100 acres. There are close to one thousand animals living here including kangaroos, bears, eagles, lions, and penguins. The Exploratorium is also free on the first Wednesday of every month. It’s a hands-on science museum for children. Exhibits teach children about weather, memory, psychology, cells, living things, light, sound, and electronic gadgets. The competing California Academy of Science is free every third Wednesday. It’s slightly larger and is made up of three main exhibits: a planetarium, a rainforest, and an aquarium.
Get lost on Fisherman’s Wharf! Although many San Francisco natives avoid Fisherman’s Wharf and label it as a tourist trap, it’s still a fun place to go. Most of the attractions are heavily marketed towards visitors. But head on out towards the end of the pier for a free show. You’ll see dozens of sea lions sunbathing on the docks. If you’ve got a small budget to work with, consider renting a bicycle and taking it for a spin around the city. It’s fun to bike across the Golden Gate Bridge to Sausalito.
